Everyone knows that appearances can be deceiving!
That is, pots of gold may not always look the way you might expect them to look. This could be true even in a rational, nonmagical world. Perhaps the cow was standing on a gold mine or oil well. Perhaps the cow had some physical characteristics that would have made her a movie or advertising star. Perhaps the cow was pregnant with - or capable of breeding - a prize bull (whose semen could sell for three to ten times the price of gold).
